RIRS (Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery) – The Modern Approach to Kidney Stone Removal

Safe | Scarless | Advanced Stone Management at Iconix Clinic, Jaipur

What is RIRS?

RIRS (Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery) is an advanced, minimally invasive laser surgery used to remove kidney stones without any incisions or external cuts. Using a flexible ureteroscope passed through the urinary tract, RIRS allows direct visualization and fragmentation of stones using a Holmium Laser.

This technique is especially effective for:

  • Kidney stones up to 2 cm
  • Stones in difficult-to-reach locations (lower calyx)
  • Patients who are unfit for open or PCNL surgery
  • Recurring or residual stones after previous surgeries

How RIRS is Performed

  1. The patient is given general or spinal anaesthesia.
  2. A flexible scope is inserted via the urethra and passed through the bladder and ureter into the kidney.
  3. The stone is visualized in real-time and fragmented using laser energy.
  4. Fragments are either removed or left to pass naturally.
  5. A DJ stent may be placed temporarily to aid healing and drainage.

Advantages of RIRS

  • No incision or external cut
  • Minimal blood loss
  • Short hospital stay (usually 24 hours)
  • Quick recovery
  • Suitable for bilateral stone removal
  • Less pain compared to traditional surgeries
  • Ideal for high-risk or elderly patients

Who Should Consider RIRS?

You may benefit from RIRS if you have:

  • Stones less than 2 cm are not responding to medical treatment
  • Failed ESWL or URS
  • Recurrent renal calculi
  • Bleeding disorders (where PCNL is risky)
  • Stones in the lower calyx or complex kidney anatomy
